Rick celebrated his 50th birthday this past August and for his gift my mom planned him his first official family vacation. Rick joined our family later on in our lives and so family trips just never seemed to work out. I was in college, CJ was in highschool, then came a REAL job for me and marriage, CJ went to college, then John and I had some darling little boys that completely zapped all of our time...you get the point. Now, life is still hectic, but we were determined to make this vacation happen. Mom started talking about it nearly a year prior to the trip happening. She had a dozen travel brochures sent to my house since the trip was going to be a surprise. We spent a few weekends online checking out the best spots and finally decided on Nebraska. It was a short and sweet vacation to Omaha, but we packed in all sorts of fun with a little pool/down time too. Somehow all of us have lived just 3 hours away from there, but we had never gone. It is so strange now that I look back on it. Omaha was awesome! We cannot wait to go back. It was the perfect little place for a family trip. We hit up the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, the Old Market area, did a little shopping, checked out some dinosaurs at Fontenelle Forest, had a little pool time, rode some carnival type rides (some more dangerous than others! Literally, I am not sure how the Fun Plex stays open with all of the obvious hazards, but hey, we enjoyed ourselves) and walked over the Missouri River on the pedestrian bridge. It was so great to be all together.
